Lomonosov Moscow State University (MSU)

 
Lomonosov Moscow State University is  the largest, the olddest and besides the leading university in Russia. It is named in honor of its founder, Mikhail Lomonosov.

The establishment of the university was instigated
by Ivan Shuvalov and Mikhail Lomonosov, and the decree ordering its creation was issued by Russian Empress Elizabeth on January 25 (January 12 old style), 1755. The first lectures were held on April 26. January 25 is still celebrated as Students' Day in Russia.


The university has 39 faculties, more than 300 subdepartments and 15 research centers. 
More than 40 000 students (graduate and postgraduate) and about 7 000 undergraduates study at the university, and over 5 000 specialists do the refresher course here. More than 6 000 professors and lecturers, and about 5 000 researchers work for the faculties and research institutes. Its current rector is Viktor Sadovnichiy (since 1992). Lomonosov Moscow State University offers a world class education to everyone with the ability to benefit.


Faculties:

  • Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics:

     Today the Mathematics and Mechanics Department comprises 26 chairs (17 in the mathematical and 9 in the mechanics branch) and 14 research laboratories. Students can get professions "Mathematics. Applied mathematics" and "Mechanics. Applied mathematics". The education lasts 5 years and students choose their chair at 3rd year.
  • Faculty of Computational Mathematics and Cybernetics:

    CMC is the leading Russian research and training center in the fields of applied mathematics, computing and software development. Education at CMC combines in-depth theoretical studies, extensive practical exercises, and research.There are main 12 Master's programs. 
  •  Faculty of chemistry:

    Today the Faculty of Chemistry comprises 16 departments representing all contemporary branches of Chemistry. Currently there are about 1000 junior and senior undergraduate students on a 5-year Specialist's Degree program and 280 graduate students on a 3-year Candidate's Degree program.
  • Faculty of Physics:

    Nowadays, Faculty of Physics includes 7 divisions (experimental and theoretical physics, solid state physics, radiophysics, nuclear physics, geophysics, astronomy, and complimentary education), which fall into 38 chairs.    
  • Faculty of Materials Science:

    The educational program of the faculty includes mathematics, physics, chemistry and mechanics, and also number of specially developed practical courses.
    The faculty annually accepts 25 new students. The education lasts 5.5 years (11 semesters) for Specialist degree, or 4 years for Bachelor's degree and 2 more years for Master's degree.     
  • Faculty of Biology:

    Comprising 28 departments, the Faculty of Biology has 3 problem-dedicated laboratories, over 50 research laboratories at the departments, 4 faculty laboratories. The Faculty of Biology offers a variety of 5-year Specialist's Degree programs.        
  • Faculty of Bioengineering and Bioinformatics:

    Established in 2002, the Faculty of Bioengineering and Bioinformatics trains highly qualified specialists for scientific and medical institutions and industry, mainly pharmaceutical and biotechnological companies.  The curriculum includes the following biomedical engineering disciplines: genetic engineering; bioengineering of microorganisms, animals and plants; cell cloning and transplantation; protein engineering; engineering enzymology. Advanced obligatory courses of mathematics and informatics are complemented by optional special courses in the subjects.     
  • Faculty of Soil Science:

     The Faculty is a leading institution in soil science and ecology. The curriculum includes students' field placements at the experimental centre of Chashnikovo in the Solnechnogorsk District of the Moscow Region, as well as field work to study the zonal soil and flora of the main natural areas of Russia.
    The Faculty of Soil Science offers undergraduate 4-year Bachelor's Degree programmes, 5-year Specialist's Degree programs, as well as 2-year Master's Degree program for Bachelor's or Specialist's degree holders.    
  • Faculty of Geology:

    The Faculty trains specialists in fundamental research in both theoretical and applied branches of Earth sciences. The 4-year Bachelor's degree program allows majoring in six areas. To proceed to their fifth year, students are to pass the entrance examination in their major discipline. After completing a five-year program students obtain a degree of Specialist in geology, geophysics, geochemistry, hydrogeology and geological engineering, geology and petrology, or ecological geology. A Bachelor's degree holder, after passing an examination, can enrol in one of 32 two-year MA programs.   
  • Faculty of Geography:

    The faculty consists of 15 departments.Undergraduates are offered 26 specialist areas within our 8 major fields: geography, cartography, hydrology, meteorology, ocean science, management of natural resources, eco-geology, tourism.
    A Master's Degree program offers 5 major fields: geography, hydrometeorology, geography and cartography, ecology and management of natural resources, tourism. There is MBA program in Tourism opened in 2008. A Bachelor's Degree program covers 4 major fields.   
  • Faculty of Fundamental Medicine:

    The curriculum focuses on natural sciences and biology, including mathematics, physics, chemistry, molecular and cell biology, anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, genetics.The Faculty has 12 departments.The Faculty graduates are awarded a degree in medical care and a qualification of medical practitioner.    
  • Faculty of Physical Chemistry:

    The students choose their major area at either the Chemistry or the Physics department.   
  • Faculty of History:

     There are seventeen departments.Graduates are conferred the qualification "historian, teacher", identifying their major specialization, as, for example, "history of international relations", "historical and cultural tourism", "historical politology", "ethnology", "archeology", etc. The qualification "art historian" is awarded to those majoring in "history of art".   
  • Faculty of Philology:

     The faculty offers full-time 5-year Specialist's Degree programs in various fields of philology and part-time 6-year Specialist's Degree program in Russian philology.The faculty includes 20 Departments, a few laboratories and research centers.  
  • Faculty of Philosophy:

    There are 17 departments at the faculty.It offers a few specializations, according to the division of the faculty the student chooses (Philosopher. Instructor in Philosophy,Specialist in Religious Studies. Instructor in Religious Studies, Specialist in Cultural Studies, Specialist in Public Relations, Political analyst and Specialist in Economic Politics. The faculty offers three Master's degree programs.  
  • Faculty of Economics:

    Since 1991 the faculty has run full-time 4-year Bachelor's Degree and 2-year Master's Degree programs in Economics and Management.There are 18 departments at the Faculty of Economics.  
  • Faculty of Law:

    The faculty has 16 departments and 3 laboratories. The undergraduate course is 5 years.  
  • Faculty of Journalism: 

    The Faculty of Journalism offers full-time 5-year Specialist's Degree programs, part-time 6-year Specialist's Degree programs as well as 2-year Master's Degree programs for Specialist's and Bachelor's degree holders.
    Graduates are awarded degrees in Journalism and qualifications according to the major area they have specialized in: "Periodical press", "Periodical press. Editorial front office", "Television broadcasting", "Radio broadcasting", "Internet journalism", "Advertising", "Public relations", "Photojournalism", "Publishing", "Design for Mass Media", "Artistic culture", "International journalism".
    The faculty comprises 14 departments.  
  • Faculty of Psychology:

    The Faculty of Psychology comprises 11 departments.
    The Faculty of Psychology offers full-time 5-year Specialist's Degree programs and part-time 6-year Specialist's Degree programs.
    Undergraduates major in two areas: psychology and clinical psychology. 
  • The Institute of Asian and African Studies:

    Students choose among the divisions of Philology, History, and Economics and Social Studies. The tinstitute offers full-time 4-year Bachelor's Degree programs, 5-year Specialist's Degree programs, and 2-year Master's Degree programs in Oriental and African Studies. 
  • Faculty of Sociology:

    It offers full-time 5-year Specialist's Degree programs and 2-year Master's Degree programs for Bachelor's and Specialist's degree holders, as well as 3-year post-graduate programs for Specialist's and Master's degree holders.enior undergraduates start their specialization in their third year. 
  • Faculty of Foreign Languages and Area Studies:

    The Faculty of Foreign Languages and Area Studies comprises three divisions: Division of Linguistics and Intercultural Communication, Division of Area Studies and International Relations, Division of Cultural Studies.
    The Division of Area Studies and International Relations offers full-time 5-year Specialist's Degree and 4-year Bachelor's Degree programs in Area Studies.
    The faculty offers a full-time 4-year Bachelor's Degree program and 2-year Master's Degree program in Linguistics to international students interested in the Russian language and Russian Studies. 
  • Faculty of Public Administration:

     It has 2 departments and 3 laboratories. Graduates are awarded the qualifications "Specialist in Public Administration" or "Specialist in Business Administration".
  • Faculty of World Politics:

    Full-time undergraduate students complete their course of study in international relations in five years.The Faculty has two research subdivisions. If inclined to research, its undergraduates may become members of the Students' Research Society.
  • Faculty of Fine and Performing Arts:

    The Faculty offers full-time 4-year Bachelor's Degree and 2-year Master's Degree programs in Fine Arts.The Faculty has four Departments. 
  • Faculty of Global Processes:

    The faculty offers full-time 5-year Specialist's Degree programs in International Relations, graduates being awarded a minor qualification of Translator in the Sphere of Professional Communication. 
  • Faculty of Educational Studies:

    The Faculty of Educational Studies has the Department of History and Philosophy of Educationand the Department of Educational Technologies.
    Graduates are awarded the qualification of Teacher or Instructor of institution of higher education and have the right to work as teachers of their major subjects in secondary and high schools and institutions of higher education.
    The faculty offers Master's degree program in Education Management which enrolls holders of Bachelor and higher degrees in various fields. 
  • Faculty of Political Science:

    Graduates are highly-qualified specialists majoring in various specific subjects that a degree in Political Science embraces. The 5-year full-time Specialist's Degree program in Political Science leads to the qualification "Politologist. Instructor in Political Science". 
  • School of Business Administration:

    The faculty offers full-time 4-year Bachelor's Degree program and 2-year Master's Degree programs in Business Administration. 
  • Moscow School of Economics:
     
    It offers full-time 4-year Bachelor's Degree and 2-year Master's Degree programs. Master's students can specialize in Economic Theory and Development of Modern Russia or in Financial Economics. 
  • School of Translation and Interpretation:

    It trains interpreters and translators in the following pairs of languages: Russian-English, Russian-German, Russian-French, Russian-Spanish, Russian-Chinese.Non Russian-speaking international students are taught translation/ interpreting in the respective pairs the Native Language - Russian.
    The School of Translation and Interpretation offers a variety of degree programs.
    The 4-year full-time Bachelor's Degree program "Linguistics" leads to BA in Linguistics.
    The 2-year full-time Master's Degree program leads to MA in Linguistics; only Specialists's or Bachelor's degree holders are to apply for enrollment. 
  • Graduate School of Public Administration:

     The Graduate School of Public Administration offers full-time 2-year Master's Degree programs in Public Administration and a number of part-time continuing education programs in the field. We admit both Russian and foreign citizens holding Bachelor's, Specialist's or Master's degrees.
  • School of State Audit:

    The School of State Audit offers two academic programs: "Economics" and "Law" which provide students with comprehensive knowledge in Economics, Law, social and political aspects of Public Administration and State Audit. 
  • Graduate School of Management and Innovation:

    The Graduate School of Management and Innovation offers 2-year full-time Master's Degree program in Management. 
  • Graduate School of Innovative Business:

    All students have an obligatory 3-semester course of English.
    It offers three 2-year full-time Master's Degree programs. An applicant is to be a holder of Bachelor's, Specialist's or Master's degree. 
  • School of Contemporary Social Sciences:

    The School of Contemporary Social Sciences offers two academic programs: "Sociology" and "Management".
