St. Petersburg State UniversitySt. Petersburg State University is the oldest institution of higher education in Russia. At present, there are more than 32,000 students in University, receiving education in more than 323 specialties in 20 faculties. University's staff comprises almost 14,000 people, including nearly 6,000 teachers (1,000 Doctors of Science, over 2,000 Candidates of Science, 42 Academicians of state academies) who represent 289 academic departments. The question about the foundation of the university aroused active discussions in 1990s. According to one of the versions modern SPSU is a successor of the so-called Academic University, which was founded together with Academy of Sciences. At the present time this version is officially accepted by the administration of the university. According to another version, the modern SPSU is a successor of St.Petersburg University which was founded in 1819 in the result of the renaming and further reorganization of the Main Pedagogical University. In this case the date of the foundation is 8 February 1819. Today, St. Petersburg University is a major centre of the Russian science, education and culture enjoying a high international standing. Many higher education institutions of Europe, America, and Asia maintain contacts with St. Petersburg State University, including the University of Cambridge (Great Britain), the University of Bologna (Italy), the Free University of Berlin, the University of Hamburg (Germany), Carleton University (Canada), the University of Amsterdam (the Netherlands), the University of Stockholm (Sweden), the Municipal University of Osaka (Japan). St. Petersburg State University's Rector is Professor Nikolay Mikhaylovich KROPACHEV, Doctor of Law, Head of the Criminal Law Department, Chairman of the Academic Council of the SPbSU Faculty of Law.
